Messy offices can seriously hold up the works when it comes to…well, work. When you work from home, it’s important to have everything organized and neat, because it’s so easy to get distracted. Here’s how to clean up so that you can buckle down.
Home Office Organization Tips
Block Out Time for a Once-Over Cleaning Session
Okay, so you’re not yet at the maintenance stage. Instead, you’re at the “I have to do a major office overhaul stage.” Block out an entire morning, afternoon or even day to clean up and organize your office, which will make it easier to maintain moving forward.
Organize Your Desktop
Even if you have a ton of space in your office, you spend most of your time on your desktop. Which means it is the easiest place to let get out of control. With a desktop organizer and filing systems, plus space for your work utensils (pens and scrap paper, for example). You can keep your primary work-space sane. It’s also a good idea to keep the items you use most within arm’s reach. Like on your desktop organizer, and then move the items you don’t use that much elsewhere.
Regularly Maintain and Declutter Your Office
Without staying on top of your office, it’s going to get out of control again. Set aside time to go through your paperwork and get rid of what you don’t need. Take out the garbage and sort through your drawers. Whether you spend a bit of time each morning doing this or one morning a week decluttering, maintenance is key.
Stop Adding to the Mess
When you feel the urge to buy something new for your home office, decide if you truly need it or not. Is it actually something you require for your job and something you’ll use? Is there a possibility you already own it or that you have something that will serve the same purpose?
If your office is so messy you don’t know where to start, take 15 minutes to tackle the problem. Even if you don’t clean it up , you’ll have made a huge dent. When your office is less messy than before, you’ll be surprised at how drastically your productivity and focus improve.

This is so me right now! I just told my husband I need to take control of my messy offices. I had it well organized and before I knew it , it was a mess again. I know I need a few desk organizers to place my pens and small items inside. Great tips!!

My desk does have a tendency to become rather cluttered, even though I try my best to keep it clean. That desk organizer looks like it would be a great addition to my desk, and would work to keep everything organized and in its place.
